Joan Ponç (Spain, 1927-1984) 'Sin título', 1974 silkscreen on paper 27.2 x 18.9 in. (69 x 48 cm.) Edition of 125 ID: PON1135-001-125 Hand-signed by author _______________________________________________________ Joan Ponç was a Spanish artist and one of the most important exponents of the Catalan avant-garde movement, known as Dau al Set.  He was born on January 31, 1927, in Barcelona, Spain, and began his artistic career in the early 1940s. Ponç was a painter, sculptor, engraver, illustrator, and set designer. His early works were marked by his interest in Surrealism and the influence of artists such as Max Ernst and Yves Tanguy.  In the late 1950s, he returned to Spain and settled in Sant Just Desvern, near Barcelona, where he continued to work as an artist and set designer. His work evolved towards a more figurative style, with a marked interest in mythology and fantasy.  Ponç passed away on September 3, 1984, leaving behind a significant body of work that includes paintings, sculptures, engravings, and illustrations. Today, he is considered one of the most important artists of the Catalan avant-garde movement and an essential figure in the history of Spanish art.
