Original 1976 Surf Film Poster "A Matter of Style"

Original 1976 Surf Film Poster "A Matter of Style"

Located in PARIS, FR

This original 1976 "A Matter of Style" poster celebrates one of the defining surf films of the 1970s, a period often regarded as the golden age of modern surfing culture. Produced by Golden Breed, the legendary Australian surfwear company, the film documented the emergence of a new generation of surfers whose approach emphasized elegance, flow and individuality as much as athletic performance. More than a sports documentary, A Matter of Style became a manifesto for an entire lifestyle. The poster itself perfectly reflects this philosophy. Dominated by deep black backgrounds contrasted with vibrant yellow and orange typography, the composition combines dramatic surfing photography with unmistakably seventies graphic design. The flowing script used for the word "Style" mirrors the fluid movements of a surfer carving across a wave, transforming typography into motion. The promotional text proudly announces the participation of surfers from Australia, Hawaii, California and the American East Coast, highlighting the increasingly international nature of surfing during the decade. The film featured some of the era's most influential riders, including Peter Townend, future world champion, alongside Ian Cairns, Terry Fitzgerald, Michael Peterson, Jackie Dunn, Gerry Lopez and Shaun Tomson, all figures who helped redefine modern surfing. Unlike earlier surf films that focused primarily on spectacular waves and exotic destinations, A Matter of Style emphasized the aesthetic dimension of surfing itself. Smooth lines, elegant positioning on the board and harmony with the wave became central themes, giving rise to the famous slogan featured on the poster: "Live Free, Surf Free." The film emerged during a transformative period for surfing culture. The mid-1970s saw the transition from the carefree beach culture of the 1960s toward a more professional and international sport, while still retaining the countercultural values that had made surfing so appealing to a generation seeking freedom and adventure.
