New York-based painter and printmaker Deborah Freedman was born in 1947. A native of New York City, she majored in studio art at New York University, studying under Audrey Flack and Robert Blackburn. Today, she lives and works in NYC and the Hudson Valley, where her evocative landscapes and nature-inspired works are widely exhibited. "My work explores the tension between nature’s invisible physical force and a painterly,, emotive interpretation. For the past twenty-five years I have been observing and drawing a pond located near my home in the Hudson Valley," says Freedman. "The pond appears in paintings and prints informed by catastrophic events such as 9/11, Hurricane Irene, Covid, and recently the war in Israel/Palestine. The pictorial space is warped or disturbed, an investigation of a dreamlike threatened landscape. The work echoes my disquiet about the instability of our environment - as if there is a hole in the world that needs to be healed."
