Gottfried Salzmann (born March 26, 1943, in Saalfelden, Austria) is a leading figure in contemporary Austrian art, celebrated for his refined watercolor practice and cross-disciplinary approach. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (1963–1965) before continuing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1965–1968), where his visual language was shaped by both Central European draftsmanship and French modernism. Salzmann debuted publicly in 1969 in Salzburg and soon gained recognition for luminous urban and architectural watercolors. Over time, he expanded his practice to include drawing, engraving, lithography, and photography, often intervening directly on photographic works with paint—particularly while traveling without traditional materials. In 1989, he illustrated Jean-Paul Sartre’s Situations of New York with a suite of lithographs published by the Bibliophiles de France. His work has been honored with major awards in Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, and Rome, affirming his international standing and the enduring relevance of his poetic, observational vision.
