About the Item

This framed 4.875" x 14.5" woodblock print by Japanese woodblock printmaker Joichi Hoshi is a narrow, horizontal composition of thin branches. This monochromatic work, accented by subtle specks of gold leaf, is illustrated using a spectrum of red hues from a deep, rich crimson to a more vivid cardinal-red. This work has been placed in a complementary red frame, measuring 17.75" x 21" in total. Although Joichi Hoshi had been classically trained in oil painting at the Mushashino College of Fine Arts, his interest in woodblock printmaking had led him to a self-taught approach to the medium years before, in the 1940s. By the 1970s, his works had influenced a movement in Japanese art that saw a significant growth in tree imagery as subject matter. Joichi Hoshi gained international recognition through participating in biennials throughout the 1950s and 1960s, such as the Tokyo International Print Biennial where he exhibited in 1959, 1961 and 1963. His work has since been exhibited in various museum collections around the world.
