About the Item

The little that is know about the painter and printmaker Stewart Wheeler indicates that most of his career was spent in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And makes Atlantic City, New Jersey, a likely spot for a beach vacation as it is more or less a straight and easy drive. This serigraph (listed here as a 'screen print') keeps the flat, bright colors associated with the medium while showing them to best advantage on black paper. The print can be read bottom to top, with mermaids and seahorses frolicking in the Atlantic Ocean waves at the foot of the picture while the beach cabanas, the Victorian architecture of cottages, and boardwalk follies draw us up through the layers. It is signed, titled, and annotated 'Serigraph,' in pencil. The full sheet is 18 x 10 inches.
