About the Item

Brauer’s 1973 illustrations for The Hasidic Tales are extraordinary examples of etching pushed to its expressive limits. Through the masterful use of layered aquatint, Brauer achieves a richness of color and saturation that defies traditional expectations of the medium, creating densely imaginative scenes that feel at once folkloric and fantastical. Arik (Erich) Brauer (Vienna, 1929–2021) was a leading figure of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, a postwar movement that fused Old Master technique with visionary, allegorical imagery. Working between Vienna and Paris, Brauer built a practice that moved fluidly across painting, book illustration, and printmaking—media presented together in major museum surveys of his work. In XX Chassidische Erzählungen (published by Editeuropa Anstalt & Galerie Sydow, Frankfurt am Main), Brauer created twenty richly colored etching-and-aquatint prints (designed c. 1968–70; issued 1973).
