This elegant circa 1838 engraving presents a formal portrait of Louis‑Philippe I, based on a composition by the renowned portrait painter Franz Xaver Winterhalter. The work reflects the refined style of nineteenth-century court portraiture, designed to emphasize both authority and dignity. The king is depicted standing beside a table bearing royal insignia and ceremonial regalia, including the crown and other symbols of power. Dressed in a richly decorated military uniform adorned with medals and decorations, Louis-Philippe appears as both monarch and commander. His posture is confident yet composed, embodying the image of a ruler who combines authority with restraint. Louis-Philippe became king following the July Revolution of 1830, which brought an end to the Bourbon Restoration. Unlike earlier monarchs who ruled as “King of France,” he adopted the title “King of the French,” reflecting a constitutional monarchy intended to represent the nation rather than divine royal authority. Winterhalter was one of the most sought-after portrait painters of the nineteenth century. Known for his elegant depictions of European royalty and aristocracy, he developed a distinctive style characterized by smooth modeling, refined detail, and a sense of grandeur that appealed strongly to royal patrons across Europe. Engravings based on such portraits allowed the royal image to circulate widely among the public. At a time when photography was still in its infancy, printed engravings were an essential means of disseminating official portraits of rulers, reinforcing their presence throughout the kingdom.
