About the Item

Original First Day Cover (FDC) issued by the US Post Office, and postmarked with a dateline of Washington, D.C. on December 2, 1964. Hand signed in black ink by Jasper Johns The FDC features a 5-cent postage stamp entitled "To the Fine Arts" stamp designed by Stuart Davis, first issued by the U.S. Postal Service on December 2, 1964. Directly underneath the Stuart Davis stamp is the ink (hand) signature of Jasper Johns. On the left, it also features a commercial raised relief plaque, utilizing a specialized resin-on-aluminum technique - a raised aluminum cachet that reproduces the iconic Cubist style of Pablo Picasso, specifically inspired by his 1962 portrait "Head of a Woman in a Hat" (frequently depicting his wife, Jacqueline Roque. The raised Picasso-inspired aluminum plaque bears the signature of the metallurgist, noting that the patent for design is pending. This work has been elegantly float framed in a museum quality bold blue frame under UV plexiglass.
