About the Item

This original 1978 poster by Lardrot was created for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, held on June 10 and 11 under the organisation of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest. It presents the legendary endurance race through the intense concentration of a helmeted driver seated inside an open-cockpit racing prototype. The tightly cropped composition places the viewer almost inside the car. Only the driver’s eyes are visible beneath the helmet, framed by the windscreen and surrounding bodywork. This direct perspective communicates the focus, isolation and physical strain experienced during a competition lasting an entire day and night. Lardrot treats the photographic image with a coarse, multicoloured halftone texture. Areas of the car and driver appear to dissolve into red, blue, yellow and black dots, giving the poster a distinctly modern late-1970s character. The monumental red number “24” and heavy black typography provide a strong visual anchor beneath the image. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a test not only of outright speed but also of reliability, strategy and human endurance. Drivers must negotiate changing light, fatigue and continuous traffic, while their teams work throughout the race to keep the cars competitive. The poster captures this demanding atmosphere through a single concentrated human presence. With its dramatic viewpoint, experimental photographic treatment and powerful typography, this original poster is a striking example of 1970s motorsport design.
