About the Item

Color woodcut, Edition 15. John Buck has an unusual approach to making woodcuts, creating the woodblocks like giant wooden puzzles. The pieces can be lifted out and inked in various colors, reassembled and printed simultaneously. Also unique is his method of incising the characteristic signs, symbols and images which surround a central figure. In "Argosy", a large glass jar containing a suspended potato growing water is the central icon. The variety and juxtaposition of the images in the background offer a wide range of interpretations by the viewer.

The Night Prism

The Night Prism

By John Buck

Located in Lyons, CO

Color Woodcut, Edition 20. In “The Night Prism”, angled surfaces meander in an ornamental fashion delineating a human figure. This constructed body, the central motif of the print, is not meant to be an animated, mobile form, but a prism, a tool to refract or reflect light. A frenzy of activity occurs among the graphic elements in the background: air escapes from a balloon figure, multiple explosions detonate on the perimeter of a globe, surfaces appear to melt or sweat and wind blows. We seem to be witnessing a world gone wrong...

Suzanne McClelland fuses painterly marks with linguistic elements, creating rhythmic canvases that explore both visual and written languages.
