Contemporary
Mauro Oliveira was born in São Paulo, Brazil and raised on the outskirts under extreme poverty, with no running water or electricity. He and his six siblings were sent to a military state-run orphanage after both parents passed away in their 30s. His passion for the United States and art started at age nine in the orphanage. His first art project, at age 10, was to paint and decorate the plain tin piggy banks that were given out for free by the banks and then selling them. Oliveira encouraged and supervised the other children to do the same and raised funds for food. He did stay out of trouble, studied hard and surmounted every obstacle on his way, dreaming of making it to America one day. He made it to college with straight A’s and won a student exchange program contest sponsored by the Federal University of Uberlândia, Brazil. He studied journalism and the arts and immigrated to the U.S. in 1990.
Oliveira has worked in several different art media, from oil pastels and charcoal sketches to clay sculptures. His greatest influences are Pablo Picasso and the Spanish artist Joan Miró. Oliveira's artworks have been exhibited throughout the U.S. as well as internationally, most recently in Hong Kong, Los Angeles and New York.

Signed and numbered. Flores Para Juarez pays homage to the women in Juarez, Mexico. The female figure in the image is a friend of Magallanes who had witnessed a lot of abuse growing up in Juarez, and emerged from her experience a very strong woman. Magallanes’ piece is part of an ongoing series of portraits of personal heroes and martyrs that also serves as a mapping of the artist’s own psyche through his cultural, historical and political influences. Oscar Magallanes was born in 1976 in Duarte, CA. He recalls, “The first art I saw were murals of Zapata and Mexica glyphs from the Chicano movement. These were juxtaposed next to homeboy role calls and Old English writing. I didn’t see a gallery or museum until I was 15.” After a troubled youth and his expulsion from high school at the age of fifteen, Oscar was accepted into the Ryman Arts program which he credits with encouraging him to pursue a career in art. Studies: Between 1955-1957 he studied at the Elementary School of Applied Plastic Arts attached to the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, in Havana, Cuba. Experience: Member of the Association of Cuban Recorders and teaches several drawing and engraving courses at the National School of Art Instructors. In 1965 he entered the Graphic Experimental Workshop of Havana. In 1993 he teaches a mural ceramic course at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, working in turn at the Giuseppe Mazzotti Museum House 1903 in Albissola Mare, Italy. Exhibitions: It is included in the 1959 annual Salon, Palace of Fine Arts, Havana. He made the first personal exhibition of importance in 1967 with oil-collages and ceramics in the Havana gallery. In 1973 he placed on the mezzanine floor of the Habana Libre Hotel a mural composed of 555 pieces of ceramics started since 1971. In 1997 he presented Sosabravo, The Guardian of the Small, in the Art Gallery, Madrid, Spain. In 2001 he exhibited graphic and painting works in El Comune de Orvieto Italia, in the Sala Conca de la Laguna, Tenerife and at the Feria de la Estampa in Madrid. In Cuba, he built the 10 m2 mural called Carnaval de la Habana for the Residencial América real estate. In 2002, Galería Cernuda Arte, Coral Gables, Florida, shows his works at the Art Miami Fair. In the United Kingdom he exhibited Murano glass oil paintings and sculptures.
