About the Item

This framed 11.75" x 9.75" antique print depicts an engraving by Victorian topographical engraver John Rogers, first drawn by Nathaniel Whittock. The subject of the engraving is the Rievaulx Abbey, an abbey in North Yorkshire, England, which was seized in 1538 during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. In the bottom left corner, the print reads "N. Whittock, DEL.", and in the bottom right corner is "J. Rogers, SC.". These are abbreviations of the old English words "delineavit" and "sculpsit", loosely meaning "drawn" and "engraved". Whittock was an engraver who lived in Oxford and ran the Oxford Drawing Academy. John Rogers was born in England but died in New York in 1888. The ruins of the Rievaulx Abbey are now a tourist attraction, turning this print into something of a time capsule.
