About the Item

This striking and atmospheric American magic poster promotes George, "The Supreme Master of Magic," during his ambitious Triumphant American Tour. The dramatic portrait of the young magician is rendered against a mysterious nocturnal backdrop featuring owls, a full moon, and symbolic imagery associated with illusion, mystery, and the supernatural. The design captures the excitement and spectacle of the golden age of stage magic, when traveling illusionists competed for audiences in major theaters throughout North and South America. The central figure is Grover George (1887–1958), an American magician born in Zanesville, Ohio. Inspired by legendary magicians Harry Kellar and Howard Thurston, George developed a large-scale illusion show that toured extensively during the 1920s. Seeking to distinguish himself from his competitors, he adopted the title "The Supreme Master of Magic" and commissioned a series of elaborate posters from the renowned Otis Lithograph Company of Cleveland. His productions featured large casts, elaborate scenery, and major stage illusions. Although he never achieved the same level of fame in the United States as Thurston, George became enormously successful throughout Cuba, Central America, and South America, where he was regarded as one of the leading magicians of his era. Following his performing career, he settled in Brazil and operated a successful business manufacturing projection equipment for theaters. This poster is among the most visually compelling of George's advertising campaign. The mysterious imagery, rich color palette, and Art Deco-influenced portraiture reflect the sophisticated graphic design employed by Otis Lithograph Company during the 1920s. Posters from George's touring period are highly sought after today by collectors of magic memorabilia, theater posters, and early American entertainment advertising. This is an Original Vintage Poster, it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters.

Loterie Nationale Original Vintage French Poster by Derouet Lesacq c1939

Loterie Nationale Original Vintage French Poster by Derouet Lesacq c1939

By Derouet Lesacq

Located in Boca Raton, FL

This is one of a series of posters created for the Loterie Nationale (National Lottery) in France by a team of artists known as Derouet-Lesacq. In these posters, the element of simplicity is emphasized, allowing the artists to apply detail to the array of environments that these posters are set in. This Art Deco style poster is for a special Homemaking (Arts Menagers) lottery drawing. The man in the center of the image is shown lounging on a chair, presenting an unplugged chord, demonstrating comfort after his lottery win. The French Government promoted a nationwide lottery for many years, and during the 1930’s they commissioned artist Edgar Derouet to create many of their posters. Derouet realized his posters either alone or with one of his many collaborators. This poster is the result of a collaboration with Charles Lesacq, who worked with Derouet from 1938 to 1940. Edgar Derouet (1910-2001) is known for his simplistic, geometric and modern advertising posters for the French Lottery (Loterie Nationale). Derouet was selected by France to create a campaign for the Loterie Nationale because of his well-known reputation as a graphic artist. In his earlier days, Derouet studied with well-known poster artists Paul Colin and George Hamel, allowing him to further perfect his illustration technique. Derouet won an award for Best Poster of the Year in 1936 and was featured at the International Exposition in Paris, France in 1937. Charles Lesacq (1909-1940) was a French artist best known for his French National Lottery poster...
