TO MARRY is an original hand drawn limited edition lithograph by the highly acclaimed African-American woman artist Elizabeth Catlett, master printmaker and sculptor best known for her depictions of the African-American experience. TO MARRY features a creative collage style portrait of a bride and groom, utilizing Japanese rice paper shapes to create a lace-like effect on the bride's veil and wedding dress, gold ink for her earring, crayon texture as a background, faces and clothing comprised of solid matte colors of black, warm mocha brown, orange, white, and turquoise blue, the engraved linocut image of a lynched man prominently positioned below within a bold red rectangle. TO MARRY is from the FOR MY PEOPLE suite; a set of 6 lithographs illustrating the well known 1942 poem by Margaret Walker. TO MARRY - corresponding Margaret Walker FOR MY PEOPLE poem stanza : “For the boys and girls who grew in spite of these things to be man and woman, to laugh and dance and sing and play and drink their wine and religion and success, to marry their playmates and bear children and then die of consumption and anemia and lynching…” Print size 23” x 19”, unframed color lithograph on archival Arches paper, 100% acid free, mint condition, hand signed in pencil by Elizabeth Catlett, print documentation will be provided Edition size - 99, printed using traditional hand lithography methods at J.K. Acclaimed for her figurative sculpture and printmaking, Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) has been one of the most prominent black artists of the last 50 years. Known for her technical accomplishment, Catlett specialized in realistic art that showed her concern for preserving black cultural traditions, especially as represented in the lives of everyday, working-class people.
