About the Item

1910 Master Wood Engraving after Rembrandt with Cap, Signed Beautifully rendered print after Rembrandt by master engraver Timothy Cole (British/American b. 1852 d. 1931.) Rembrandt sits in the center of the composition, with his head slightly turned towards the viewer. His hand reaches forward towards the viewer in the bottom right corner. His clothing and hair are reproduced with a high level of detail as Cole utilizes the grain of the wood to his advantage. The print has a lovely sense of atmosphere, with some edges and light. Printed on Japanese tissue paper. Print size: 6.5" H x 5.25" W Paper size: 11.25" H x 9" W Mat size: 14" H x 11" W Signed on plate "T Cole 1910" Hand signed in pencil under print "Timothy Cole" This small block print was originally published in the February 1912 edition of Century magazine. Cole later produced a larger version of this print which is dated on the block as 1921 and measures 11/16" H × 7 15/16" W. Timothy Cole was born in London in 1852 and moved to Chicago in 1857 where he would eventually become an apprentice at the wood engraving firm, Bond and Chandler. Cole left Chicago in 1871 after his work and possessions were destroyed in the city's Great Fire. He moved to New York and began working as a freelance engraving, eventually securing a contract with Charles Scribner and Sons where he began engraving the work of prominent artists such as James Whistler. Abbott Thayer, Winslow Homer and George Inness. Cole became known for his reproduction of old master painters and in 1883 Scribner's sent him to Europe in order to complete a large series of engravings for its publication Century Magazine. Cole spent 28 years living in Europe and engraving master works, including six years in Spain, four in France, ten in Italy, and four in the Netherlands. His engravings are credited as one of the reasons Century was such a successful and prestigious magazine.

By Jacques Callot

Located in Soquel, CA

St. Simon from "Les Grands Apôtres Debout, Représentant Le Sauveur, La Bienheureuse Marie et Les Saints Apôtres" Original 17th Century Etching by Jacques Callot. This portrait of St. Simon depicts him standing in a street, holding a book and leaning on a saw. The saw is typical of St. Simon's depictions as he was said to have been martyred by being sawed in half. Very good impression of this print, with bold lines and high contrast. This leaflet contains the words "Callot fec." in the bottom right, shorthand for the Latin fecit, meaning Callot made this. This edition contains no publishers mark or numbering on the piece, indicating that it is from the first printing state. Jacques Callot was born in the Duchy of Lorraine around 1592 to an important family in the court. He started an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at the age of 15, but later began learning etching. He is known for his technical skill in etching and for developing the echoppe style etching needle. Callot's etchings featured religious figures as well as soldiers, common people, beggars, and court individuals. His series "The Miseries and Misfortunes of War," published while Lorraine was invaded during the Thirty Years War, later influenced Goya's "Los Desastres de la Guerra...
