About the Item

"Alas, poor Yorick!" A finely detailed engraving by John Rogers after an 1801 painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830). The scene depicts the actor John Philip Kemble (1757-1823), one of the most successful English actors of his time, in the leading role of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Lawrence painted four large canvases of Kemble in various dramatic roles, all of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy. The original painting is now in the collection of the Tate. Titled and inscribed with the artist's name within the plate. On paper. Image size: 18 x 12.5cm.
