Rembrandt van Rijn, After by Amand Durand, Dutch (1606 - 1669) - Bearded Man in a Furred Oriental Cap and Robe, Year: Of Original 1631, Medium: Etching, Image Size: 6 x 5 inches, Size: 14 x 12 in. (35.56 x 30.48 cm), Printer: Amand Durand, Description: In this small portrait, Rembrandt depicts a bearded man wearing Orientalist clothing. Turned to the side but directing his face toward the artist, the sitter is depicted through the technique of crosshatching and an otherwise intricate use of line to indicate shadow and light. French Engraver and painter Charles Amand Durand, (1831-1905) is recognized and praised for accomplishing the difficult task of renewing original copper plate designs made by Rembrandt; It is by Amand that many of Rembrandt's works were saved. He also restored plates by Albrecht Durer, Beham, and other various Old Masters from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. The task started when the main curator of the Louvre gave Amand Durand the important mission of restoring the worn down and fragile engravings made by Rembrandt. This is a modern printing from the Durand plates.
