Sea o no cierta tan subjetiva afirmación, no cabe duda de que este maestro del bodegón es uno de los artistas más interesantes del país que vio nacer a Leonardo, Giotto o Masaccio, autores que por cierto influyeron notablemente en el estilo pictórico del artista boloñés. De los siete hermanos, Giorgio fue el que más talento para las artes parecía tener. Por ello con 17 años entra a estudiar en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Bolonia y en esa etapa va a una excursión a Florencia que resultará crucial. Ahí descubre a los primitivos renacentistas italianos, que unidos a su otro ídolo pictórico, Cézanne, hicieron del arte de Morandi lo que después fue su estilo inconfundible. Como joven italiano de principios del siglo XX sintió una unión con los futuristas, pero el suyo era un arte menos temperamental. Giorgio Morandi prefería la quietud que el movimiento, el silencio a los ruidos de un motor. Por ello cuando conoció a Giorgio de Chirico, padre del movimiento metafísico, su obra comenzó a influenciarse por la de éste. Se hizo miembro de la escuela metafísica, con su luz onírica, sus lugares silenciosos y desiertos, sus volúmenes sólidos bañados por la luz. Pero poco a poco su estilo fue definiéndose e introdujo en su iconografía utensilios de la vida diaria que pasarían a formar parte de la práctica totalidad de su carrera: vasos, botellas, jarrones… Estos objetos cotidianos estaban a menudo sobre una mesa y se convertían en los únicos protagonistas de sus cuadros. Era como un Cézanne bajo el filtro metafísico.
