Most such posters rely on very plain silhouettes, this series - and we have many in this series - have a much more arty approach to the task with shading and an interesting angle view. The Curtiss SOC (also known as the "Seagull") was a biplane scout-observation aircraft that operated from US battleships and cruisers throughout the Second World War, actually outliving two newer aircraft that had been designed to replace it. Before the Soc, the US Navy had operated separate scout and observation aircraft, with the scouts operating from cruisers and the observation aircraft operating from battleships, with the main job of observing and correcting their gunfire. When work on the Soc began it was going to be an observation type, so the prototype was given the designation XO3C-1. The prototype was ordered on 19 June 1933 and made its maiden flight in April 1934. It was a single bay biplane that could operate with a single main central float and stabiliser floats on the lower wing tips, or with wheels. The XO3C-1 was originally built as an amphibian, with twin wheels built into the central float, but this idea was abandoned before the type entered production.
