About the Item
Antoine Poncet (French‑Swiss, 1928 - 2022) was a sculptor whose work belongs to the lineage of modern abstraction shaped by Jean Arp and Constantin Brâncuşi. Born in Paris into an artistic family—his grandfather was painter‑theorist Maurice Denis—he began studying sculpture in Switzerland at age fourteen, trained at the École des Beaux‑Arts in Lausanne (1942–45), then moved to Paris in 1948 where he became Arp’s assistant (1953–55). Poncet’s mature sculptures in bronze and Carrara marble speak of fluid balance, elegant volumes, and gently unfolding motion, reflecting his conviction that “everything is movement in nature, in life.” He exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1956, won the Prix André Susse in 1957, and later held prominent public installations across Europe, Japan and the United States. His refined work is held in the collections of major institutions including Museum of Modern Art (New York) and the Centre Pompidou (Paris).
