About the Item

Cesar Andrade is an artist, poet and musician born in Guarico, Venezuela in 1939. He studied at El Tucayo and at the School of Fine Arts in Barquisimeto. In 1964 he became a professor at the School of Plastic Arts of Acarigua Venezuela. In 1968, after having held exhibitions in Venezuela, he travelled Europe and eventually moved to Paris. The following year, he presented his ‘linigramas’, which represented the first in-depth study on the analysis of line. During the 1970s, he attended art courses held by Frank Popper at the University of Vincennes and by Jean Cassou at the Collège de France. As a kinetic artist, he works with the geometry of nails to ultimately create a vibrating surface. The primary elements of geometry, which dictate the arrangement of the nails, are the straight line and the point. solidity and emptiness are balanced, producing a vibration on the surface, while the diagonal and oblique lines convey unexpected elements, transforming the surface into a grid. We thus begin to understand that the key player of Andrade’s work is something outside the work itself: light. Direct frontal lighting would not allow us to perceive any depth; however, by directing the lighting to the side, one can then see a negative image - the shadow - which doubles the surface of the represented elements. The nail is always the focus of Andrade’s works, and the surprising negative space created between nail and shadow provokes a sensation of dizziness and unsteadiness. In this moment, the insignificance of the nail is completed by its shadow, thereby altering the appearance of the work. The physical surface dissolves, the location of the material is blurred, and the reflections of colour are scattered. He passed aways in 2022

Ben Abounassif was born in Caracas in 1964 to Lebanese parents. He graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1987 with a B.A. in Business Management. Abounassif's first contact working in the art world was in 2006 when he launched Leiter Gallery in Miami, a short but successful experience as a co-owner working along with Cuban-born, Miami-based artist Sinuhe Vega Leiter, and Venezuelan-born internationalist & journalist, Jesus Rojas Torres. Abounassif's innate creativity was highly influenced by working closely with local artists and by visiting their studios and launching exhibitions at Leiter's, the only gallery in the U.S. that paid a living tribute to the late Cuban musician, Israel “Cachao" López. A year later in 2007, Abounassif exhibited his first art cube on Photo Miami '07 with Hardcore Contemporary Art in Wynwood. In 2008, Miami art dealer...

Youri Leroux comes from the North of France, a region whose landscapes have seduced so many artists. Born in 1972, now married with three children, he is characterised by his reserve, his typical northern France inwardness and his sentimental attachment to his family and his origins. From a very young age, he showed great interest in art and any thing that gave free reign to his imagination. He attended classes offered by painting workshops At the age of sixteen, he went to the Saint-Luc Institute in Tournai (Belgium) where he studied new arts teaching and met famous artists. He later attended architecture and design classes. After gaining his diploma in 1999, he joined an architect’s office in Lille (France) where he worked principally with volume, colours and the enhancement of light. His first exhibition was held at Le Masquerel (France) and included fifteen artists. He sold his first paintings. The highlights of 1997 and 1998 were his wedding and the birth of his first child. His painting evolved, his work focused more on the curves of the female body and the plumpness, sensuality, shapes and shadows that it emanate. After traveling in North Africa, be began to focus on his backing material – sand was a very successful and impressive medium, giving the viewer the urge to approach and caress his paintings. In 2000, he traveled to New York, where he feasted on verticality and asymmetries that were in sharp contrast to his supple work on the female body. In early 2001, encouraged by true art lovers and the success of his paintings, he left his job as an architect to devote himself to his art. He subsequently applied these geometric ideas in a literary theme, more intimate and reassuring – perspectives, depth, repetitions, an enormous library or just three books with straight lines and the effects afforded by contrasting materials. Looking out from his open workshop, many things inspire him. Through the lovely Breton coast, he reveals to us his third pictorial theme – the combination of feminine curves and asymmetric libraries suggest old sailboat...
