About the Item

This monolithic contemporary stone and glass sculpture lights up at night. The rugged beauty of David Perrett’s sculptural work has found a place in many notable public collections. The Hamilton-based artist became captivated by the rocky Canadian shield during wilderness canoe trips. Drawing inspiration from that iconic landscape, Perrett’s visual style represents geological patterns and often uses materials found in nature. He focuses on the interplay between his chosen subject and the material—stone, wood, metal or composite materials. Perrett uses a combination of classic and contemporary techniques to create his dynamic sculptures. This imposing monolithic column is sculpted from polished limestone—its distinctive dark gray markings adding to the organic design. Sections carved out of the column that is filled with sea-green coloured glass appear to flow like a river down its length. LED lights (remotely controlled and in different colours) housed inside the column illuminate the glass. The effect at night is simply magical. This sculpture is named for the Manicouagan Lake in central Quebec, a massive circular 100 km wide lake that was created when a 214 million year old asteroid hit the earth. “The world is full of curiosities that I find by searching out arresting moments in the materials and objects that I come across.” David Perrett David Perrett grew up in Winnipeg and acquired a BFA from the University of Manitoba and an MFA from York University in Toronto. Perret works in stone, metal, and wood, and adds electronics--lighting features to his sculptures. His work can be found in both public and private collections throughout Canada.
