'Maina' is a contemporary abstract cast glass sculpture by David Ruth from his Internal Space series. It features painterly brushstroke formations in glass called trails. Trails are created through rolling molten glass into various forms and shapes. They are then placed within clear glass and fused into one large piece through kiln casting. This technique creates a layered, suspended, and vibrant three-dimensional space within. About the Internal Space Series: David’s experiments with sheet glass and fusing led him to try to make the glass thicker to see more interior space. It was during this time a professor pointed out that he was working with a metaphor, for which the internal space of the glass was the equivalent to the internal life of the mind. Eugene Caples is a designer and craftsman who worked in Kansas City in the 1960s and later through the early 21st century. "Dark Days Ahead" is in fact a glorious paper-thin porcelain sculpture with fluted sides. The "two bowls and one ball" are nestled and permanently fixed. The black and white linear design to the porcelain is relieved by the movement of the fluted sides of the "bowls." This complex design is both light and airy while being visually weighted by the innermost "ball" being covered in a silver glaze suggesting heavy stainless steel. The ceramic piece is slip cast porcelain, masking tape stenciled and glazed in the style of abstract expressionism, specifically Pointillism. It was fired in oxidation at 2230 degrees Fahrenheit.
