About the Item

Friedrich Gräsel Bochum 1927 - 2013 Osnabrück Untitled, 1968 PVC Monogrammed and dated "68" on the reverse 68 x 59 cm Catalogue raisonné 534 Authenticity guaranteed in writing. The sculptor and designer Friedrich Gräsel is known for his large abstract tube sculptures, which dominate public spaces in many cities such as Berlin, Konstanz, Essen, and other locations in the Rhine-Ruhr region. His work is characterized by modern forms and an innovative range of materials. Gräsel began by creating figurative and vegetal ceramic works. These were followed by sculptures made of metal and red plastic, inspired by the urbanity of the 1970s. Industrially manufactured products with technical functions are translated into free, aesthetic compositions. Many of his montages are variable and can be rotated, inserted, or arranged to create ever-changing formations. Gräsel's enthusiasm for three-dimensional form led to his fascination with the human body as a highly complex system of tubes (blood vessels) and compactions (organs). This fascination gave rise to his extensive series of works entitled "Arbeitsfeld Herz" (Field of Work: Heart). Friedrich Gräsel was born in Bochum in 1927. From 1952 to 1956, he studied at the art academies in Munich and Hamburg under Werner Haftmann, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Joseph Fassbender, Fritz Winter, and others. In 1967, he received the Cornelius Förderpreis Düsseldorf for sculpture, to which he now devoted himself exclusively. In 1969, he founded the well-known artist group "B1" together with Günther Dohr, Kuno Gonschior, Ewerdt Hilgemann, and Ferdinand Spindel. Until 1970, he worked as a teacher in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 1970 to 1988, he was a professor at the universities in Münster and Essen as well as at Helwan University near Cairo. In 1972, he contributed the German entry to "Sculpture in the City" on the occasion of the 36th Venice Biennale. He subsequently took part in the 12th International Biennale, Middelheimpark, in Antwerp, as well as the 10th and 13th International Biennials for Small Sculpture in Padua. In 1984, he received the JUNIOR Prize "For Art in Public Space." Since 1988, he has worked as a freelance artist. In the 1990s, he participated in exhibitions at the Japan Metallic Formative Art Institute in Tokyo. In 2001, the "Friedrich Gräsel Donation for Science and Art" was made to the Ruhr University in Bochum. His works can be found in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, and the Museum Folkwang Essen. Gräsel died in Osnabrück in 2013.

Minimalist Geometric Abstract Relief in Tonal Whites by Dutch Artist

Minimalist Geometric Abstract Relief in Tonal Whites by Dutch Artist

Located in AMSTERDAM, NL

Expressive abstract relief in white by Dutch artist Henk van Putten (1936-2019) Van Putten called himself a constructivist in the tradition of Vladimir Tatlin, with whom he shared not only aesthetic principles but also social commitment. For example, almost everything he made in 3D is made up of several parts; glued, welded or screwed together. In his paintings, which he often made prior to the 3D version, he even painted the seams where they would appear in the later work. Van Putten’s work, although easily recognisable, shows a clear affinity with artists he admires such as André Volten, Gerrit Rietveld and more generally with ‘De Stijl’. Yet he made no contact with them; he felt much more like a kindred spirit of German artists, especially the ZERO movement whose members, like himself, were strongly involved in society. He befriends people like Egon Eppich and Hap Grieshaber...
