About the Item

Vintage stylized figural sculpture by J James Akston (1898-1983 Poland/New York/Florida) Crafted of cast bronze with a rich dark brown patina. A sports figure, depicting a snow skiing or water surfing figure in a Mid Century Modern Brutalist style. Segmented torso with movable parts. Mounted to a variegated green marble base. Signed with artist signature on edge of ski or surf board. Bronze statue measures 13" x 10 1/2" Overall height with marble base 19 inches. (it is either a surfboard or a snowboard) Joseph James Akston was a Polish American sculptor, painter, known for surrealist abstract painting and Aubusson (for Les Ateliers Pinton Frères, tapisserie d'aubusson) tapestry artist. Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1898 he died in Palm Beach Florida in 1983. During the 1960s and '70s the entrepreneur-artist James Joseph Akston adopted a unique Surreal Expressionist style in order to present his private primordial universe and lampoon its denizens, a ribald cast of animal creatures with human foibles. A successful industrialist, he began his career with General Motors foreign operations and then started his own business. Intermittently he studied painting, first with Jerry Farnsworth in North Truro (Mass.) and then with Jose Clemente Orozco in Mexico. In the early 1960s Akston became publisher-editor of a group of art publications which included The Magazine Arts. Initially an abstractionist, Akston had one-man exhibitions at the New York Convention Center and the Corcoran Museum in Washington. Since 2015 the record price for this artist at auction is $12,575 USD for Spheres Aux Triangles Aubusson Tapestry, sold at Bonhams New York in 2019. He was a Graduate of Georgetown University. He sat on the board of the Norton Museum. This small exquisite "Bronze Sculpture II" is in excellent condition and a perfect example of Eugene Caples craftsmanship. This is mainly abstract with some graphic or architectural elements and is so delightful that mythical creatures demand to be considered. It cries out to be touched and held, looked at and caressed. The beautiful patina on the surface gives voice to the many hands that have done these things. Eugene Caples is a designer and craftsman who worked in Kansas City in the 1960s and later through the early 21st century. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Industrial Design in 1959. In 1963 he was accepted to Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The Cranbrook Academy of Art was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Marcello Morandín (Marcelo Román Morandín Paroni) was born in 1933 in Argentina. He was an important plastic artist and Argentine architect, distinguished in Mexico for being an excellent sculptor and furniture designer. At the end of his studies at the Faculty of Architecture of Buenos Aires, Argentina, he traveled to Mexico and settled in Xalapa, Veracruz. In this city he was part of several artistic projects and noted for being one of the founders of the Department of Aesthetic Research and Applied Design at the University of Veracruz, as well as the Department of Aesthetic Research at UNAM. Between the years 80 and 90, he carried out several monumental works, among them "La pigeon de la paz" a project for the UN; "The foundation of Tenochtitlan" located in front of the Official Residence of Los Pinos; and "The Kinetic Tower" Of the government of Veracruz that combines the light and the sound with diverse moving parts to the compass of the music of Arnold Schoenberg.
