About the Item

Kyoji Nagatani was born in Tokyo in 1950. He graduated from the University of the Arts in Tokyo and the Higher Institute of Research at the State University of Fine Arts in the Japanese capital. In 1976, he obtained a Diploma specializing in bronze fusion. He won a scholarship from the Italian government, which allowed him to graduate from the Accademia di Brera in 1984 under the guidance of sculptors Enrico Manfrini and Alik Cavaliere. Among his most impressive works are the Monument for Villa Fontana in Capriano (MI), the Monument for the Municipal Theater of Hachioji in Tokyo, and the Open Museum of Usukushi-ga-hara in Nagano. Genesis, this particular piece by Kyoji Nagatani showcases an incredible level of "purity" in terms of proportions, shapes, and colors. It is one of his notable works that exemplifies his artistic talent and mastery. This is a particular sculpture by the master Kyoji Nagatani in which he wants to transmit the lightness of the material through the vibration created by touching the wire arm.

Creating sculptures of exquisite peculiarity is an art in which Takei excels. His elegantly crafted works embody the notion of the whimsical, contradictory and idiosyncratic. There is an immediately detectable sense of humor and quick wit about the sculptures in this exhibition. Beyond playfulness, however, Takei’s aim is to challenge the viewer to alter the way in which they look at reality. Taking cues from the Surrealists of the early 20th century, Takei transforms the mundane into the fantastic - and sometimes absurd. His work is a constant inquiry into the meaning of functionality and the perception of purpose. Much like Man Ray’s iconic readymade sculpture, The Gift (1921), and Meret Oppenheim’s infamous fur-covered teacup (Object, 1936), Takei recontextualizes those pragmatic objects that we immediately recognize. With his piece Soft Shoulders (2011), Takei deconstructs a wooden clothes hanger...
