About the Item

The sculpture was created by artist Pablo Maojo, one of Spain's most famous and renowned sculptors. It was created in 2025 and measures 100 x 180 x 3 cm. It is a truncated flute, a musical instrument created from solid, hard wood. It includes an LED strip on the back that illuminates all the small gaps in the work, and is supported by two solid stainless steel strips. The artist treats the wood with oxide vinegars, a natural pigmentation technique he has been researching throughout his life. Furthermore, the pieces seem to contain light, as they are made with very detailed cuts that allow light to shine through. The interior is colored solintor red. The piece functions as both a musical instrument and a sculpture at the same time. It is currently on display in the exhibition "The Future Will Be Prehistoric" at the Manolo Eirin Gallery until September 20, 2025. About the artist, PABLO MAOJO (1961, Asturias, ES) He is one of the greats of Asturian sculpture. He follows a very personal artistic path. His pieces, always using wood as a material, are unmistakable, marked by cuts, incisions, and basic colors (blue, black, red, etc.) that can only be defined as "Maojian." Some consider him, though he's not entirely sure why, a disciple of Joaquín Rubio Camín. Perhaps this is because, until the Gijón master's death in 2007, they had their workshops very close to each other. "He used to say that if we looked alike, it was because we were from the same field." His first solo exhibition was in 1982 in Villaviciosa. His sculptures can be found in public spaces in Oviedo, Gijón, and Madrid, and his works can be found in international art collections. The sculptor carves fine woods until they breathe. Their hollows are not absence, but screens of light. As if the sculpture wanted to become air, its forms recall lost totems or primitive machines that function only with intuition. The deep color of his pieces, achieved through oxide vinegars and natural dyes, seems to emerge from the very core of the trees.
