About the Item

Created in 1971, this cast polyester resin cube exemplifies Peter Alexander's pioneering use of industrial materials to investigate light, color, and perception. A leading figure of California's Light and Space movement, Alexander embraced polyester resin for its extraordinary optical qualities, allowing light to penetrate the material and create subtle shifts in color and transparency. Rather than functioning as a solid geometric object, the sculpture seems to dissolve at its edges as ambient light changes throughout the day. The softly luminous blue green rim appear suspended within the black resin, creating an atmosphere that is both materially present and visually elusive. Executed during the height of Alexander's groundbreaking resin period, the work reflects his belief that sculpture should engage the viewer through direct sensory experience, transforming ordinary light into an ever-changing perceptual phenomenon.
