About the Item

Slip is a stone sculpture by contemporary British artist Peter Brooke-Ball (Foundry: Pangolin Editions). Dimensions are 24 × 18 × 10 cm (9.4 × 7.1 × 3.9 in). The dimensions include the base, which is attached. Accompanied by its certificate of authenticity, this work belongs to a limited edition of 6, with only 1 edition still available. This bronze and silver sculpture, set on a Kilkenny limestone plinth, evokes the image of a cup spilling fluid silver—though its ultimate meaning is left to the viewer’s imagination. The artist’s technical mastery is evident in his interplay of diverse materials, which he combines into strikingly contemporary creations. Rather than carrying explicit messages, Peter Brooke-Ball’s works captivate through humour, simplicity, and sensuality. As he himself explains, his aim is to create “objects that are gorgeous with a hint of mystery.” At times, the sculptures touch upon themes of violence or coercion, questioning notions of protection and attachment. “I see each piece as a thought,” the artist reflects, “and I want to keep that thought secure and precious, fearing it might all slip away.” While every observer brings a personal interpretation, the often evocative titles suggest situations, concepts, or emotions. Above all, Brooke-Ball treasures the spontaneous responses of children, who approach his works instinctively and without preconceptions, engaging with them through touch as much as sight. A hallmark of his practice is the deliberate juxtaposition of contrasting materials—objects bound, suspended, covered, or tied together. In his well-known stone and rope sculptures, the soft element paradoxically shapes the hard, as the artist notes: “I like the idea of the soft defining the shape of the hard.” These contrasts imbue his works with a distinctive enigmatic quality: sometimes unsettling, sometimes playful, but always compelling.
