About the Item

This is a wonderful example of Shayne Dark's dance with form and light. The work is created out of Ironwood, and is painted a flat white. On a light colored wall, the shadows become an integral part of the work, adding another dimension. Since he began his artistic career in the mid 1980’s, Dark has participated in exhibitions throughout Ontario and Quebec, and in the United States, notably at the Albright-Knox Gallery in Buffalo, New York and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC. Many public galleries have exhibited his work – the Masur Museum of Art in LA, the MacLachlin Museum (Ontario), the Glenbow Museum (Calgary), the Art Gallery of Peterborough and Musée des Beaux‐arts de Sherbrooke. In 2014, Dark was declared one of the top ten artists not to be missed at the Miami art fair, and in 2016 he will be the artist in residence at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in New York City. His large scale public sculptures are landmarks in Canadian cities such as Calgary and Toronto. In 2017, he will be installing a significant public commission in California. He has also exhibited in Spain and Greece. He has won numerous grants and awards, and has completed a number of major public commissions in cities across Canada. One of his sculptures is now in the Canadian Embassy in Prague. A documentary on Dark’s life and work, entitled “Artist in the Round: Shayne Dark”, premiered on the Discovery Channel HD Theatre on April 25, 2004 across the United States.
