About the Item

Breach is a unique resin sculpture by contemporary artist Tom Price, dimensions are 202 × 45 × 45 cm (79.5 × 17.7 × 17.7 in). The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This sculpture exemplifies Tom Price’s ongoing exploration of materiality, a central pillar of his artistic practice. The artist describes his approach as a collaboration with materials, processes, and physical phenomena, where the final form emerges through a shared negotiation rather than unilateral control. As such, the work challenges conventional distinctions between the natural and the man-made, presenting an object that feels at once primordial and speculative, ancient yet resolutely futuristic. The piece consists of a stark, contemporary concrete column that serves as a host for an invasive synthetic growth: an eruption of meticulously crafted, mineral-like formations predominantly made of resin. These crystalline structures, rendered in translucent lavender and amber tones, evoke the organic geometries of geodes and natural rock formations and can be illuminated internally with LED light. Breach offers a compelling meditation on the Anthropocene—the geological epoch defined by humanity’s pervasive influence on the planet’s geology and ecosystems. Price imagines a future in which synthetic materials, the residual by-products of human industry, are gradually absorbed and reconfigured by natural processes, ultimately becoming indistinguishable from authentic geological matter. The sculpture embodies a dynamic interplay of tension and transformation. The column’s cold, rectilinear geometry is violently interrupted by the chaotic, luminous crystallization, creating a visual and conceptual rupture. Through this intervention, Tom Price continues to produce sculptures that are both visually arresting and conceptually resonant, inviting reflection on legacy, material permanence, and the evolving relationship between human-made objects and the natural world. The stated dimensions include the sculpture’s base (column dimensions: approximately 15 × 15 cm). The work’s weight is distributed as follows: concrete 60 kg, resin 20 kg, and steel plate 19 kg. Illumination is provided by integrated LED tape lighting with an estimated lifespan of approximately 50,000 hours. Access to the lighting system is achieved by loosening the grub screws in the casing and lifting out the resin bar. The LEDs are mounted on a removable tray secured with magnets, allowing for straightforward replacement. The sculpture is slightly elevated from the floor to permit discreet cable routing through the underside of the base. A plug-in adaptor with interchangeable heads is included and is compatible with use in Europe, Asia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The artist’s signature is located on the interior of the steel casing. For transport, Breach is shipped with the base and resin bar packed separately unless otherwise specified. Upon delivery, the bar must be secured to the base; full instructions, an Allen key, and the necessary screw are provided.

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement: “I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject. There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience. They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
