About the Item

This contemporary wall sculpture features bubbles of blue glass. Cheryl Wilson Smith is known for her uniquely beautiful glasswork—its form, colour and texture is often inspired by the rugged natural beauty of her home and studio in northern Ontario. This current series explores a different narrative that symbolizes life’s joys and challenges. The elegant composition features fourteen clear turquoise-blue blown glass bubbles; some inflated, others deflated and pierced by iron nails arranged in a cascading pattern. Light naturally shines through the glass forming shadows as the bubbles appear to float on the wall. The title refers to a popular colloquial expression. Each work is individually hand-formed in glass, so slight variations in colour, shape, and texture from the images shown are expected and inherent to the piece. “This work is a reminder to each of us who are confronted by the opinions and criticisms of others to consider those perspectives but to always stay true to our beliefs and follow our dreams. These dreams are important and valuable.” Cheryl Wilson Smith Cheryl Wilson Smith was the 2014 winner of the RBC Award for Glass through the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery. Wilson-Smith has received nine grants from the Ontario Arts Council and one from the Canada Council. Commissions include the Red Lake District Heritage Centre, Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital Donor wall. Her work has been exhibited widely across Canada, in the UK and the US.
