About the Item

Marcel Cerdan, a French boxer, is one of the few to have dethroned, thanks to his fearsome right hook, the Americans who have held the world title of "English middleweight boxing" since 1897! Born in 1916, he died in 1949, at the age of 33, in a plane crash. The enamels show traces of red: blood often stains the boxers' faces. The blue-grey effects symbolise the clouds, reminding us that Marcel Cerdan lost his life in a plane. Edith Piaf wanted him to reach her more quickly than by liner, after his fight in the United States... The title "crochet du droit" pays tribute to his famous right hook. Redoubtable at home, it enabled him to win his world middleweight title against American Tony Zale, known as the "King of the KO", in 1948.
