About the Item

This stunning piece of cast marble commands attention with it's large presence and flowing details. Eight detailed figures emerge from a spiral of waves, reaching out. Frederick Hart has been described as America's greatest living representational artist. Nihilo Working Model is the intermediate scale model for the full-sized plaster of the final sculpture of Ex Nihilio, a sculpture commissioned as part of The Creation Sculptures authorized by Washington National Cathedral, which have been described as ''the most monumental commission for religious sculpture in the United States in the twentieth century.'' Ex Nihilo translates to 'out of nothingness', an expression that Frederick Hart describes as "the metamorphoses of divine spirit and energy". As he details, the figures appear to emerge from the "nothingness of chaos, caught in the moment of eternal transformation- the majesty and mystery of divine force in a state of becoming." This piece may be carefully elevated, mounted, or embedded into a wall to display.
