About the Item

Friedrich Goldscheider Manufactory, Vienna — Monumental Art Nouveau Polychrome Terracotta Bust, circa 1900 An exceptional and unusually large Art Nouveau bust of a young woman, produced by the celebrated Friedrich Goldscheider manufactory in Vienna around 1900. Standing an impressive 67 cm high, the sculpture is executed in finely modelled polychrome terracotta. Its sophisticated brown, bronze and subtle olive patination was deliberately created to evoke the depth and appearance of an aged bronze sculpture—a highly distinctive technique for which the Goldscheider manufactory became internationally renowned. The young woman’s serene expression is framed by luxuriant flowing hair, delicately sculpted blossoms and long floral braids. The richly modelled drapery and prominent rose create a graceful, organic composition characteristic of the finest Viennese Art Nouveau sculpture. The reverse bears the impressed Friedrich Goldscheider, Wien signature, together with the legally protected designation “Reproduction Réservée” and model number 1946. The combination of its monumental scale, refined modelling, elaborate floral decoration and beautifully preserved bronze-effect patina makes this an especially decorative and highly collectable example of Goldscheider production. A rare statement piece for an important Art Nouveau collection or a sophisticated classical or contemporary interior.
