About the Item

An architectural cement head is integrated into a chestnut wood structure in this wall-mounted figurative sculpture by Spanish artist José Perozo. Created in 2025 and originally titled Proxecto XXII—Project No. 22—the work belongs to Perozo’s Proxectos series, a body of unique sculptures in which the human head is constructed through layers, openings and intersecting materials. The artist approaches the body as architecture: the physical and definitive dwelling that each person inhabits throughout life. Unlike other works in the series, the head in Proxecto XXII is held close to the wall by a vertical and horizontal chestnut wood framework. Cement and wood form a compact structural unit in which sculpture, relief and support system become inseparable. The head appears embedded within its own architecture, while the exposed timber extends beyond its profile and connects the figure directly with the surrounding space. Cast in high-hardness cement from a silicone mould, the sculpture preserves the pores, joints, tonal variations and small irregularities characteristic of a construction material. These traces are not considered defects but form an essential part of the work’s material identity, giving each sculpture in the series an unrepeatable surface and presence. The cement is manually tinted with water-based pigments, producing subtle transitions between pale grey, blue and warm ochre tones. A specially formulated semi-matte varnish protects the surface while retaining its mineral appearance. Fine aggregates preserve the detail of the original modelling, while acrylic fibres and a water-reducing additive improve strength and reduce the risk of shrinkage cracks. The chestnut wood inserts introduce warmth and organic variation into the mineral structure. Treated with a protective lasur finish, the timber occupies openings and intervals within the anatomy, suggesting beams, partitions or fragments of an internal framework. Its visible grain contrasts with the density and coolness of the cement. Through this dialogue between anatomy and construction, Perozo moves beyond conventional portraiture. The face is not presented as the likeness of a particular individual, but as an inhabited structure shaped by weight, memory and material resistance. Compact in scale yet strongly architectural, the work establishes a distinctive physical relationship with the wall. High-hardness cement, water-based pigments, semi-matte protective varnish and chestnut wood treated with lasur. Unique work, 2025. Dimensions: 20.5 cm high × 20.5 cm wide × 8.5 cm deep (8.1 × 8.1 × 3.3 in). Weight: approximately 3.1 kg. Designed for wall installation using two hooks. This architectural figurative sculpture combines a hand-tinted grey cement human head with a precisely constructed framework of natural chestnut wood. Created by Spanish sculptor José Perozo in 2025, the unique work is titled Proxecto XVII and belongs to his Proxectos series. Perozo approaches the human body as a constructed space: a physical dwelling assembled from layers, openings and structural fragments. Here, the head is not treated simply as a portrait but as an architectural volume whose anatomy appears to continue through wood. A curved chestnut structure rises from the crown and extends down one side of the face.
