About the Item

For this edition Kitade wants to bring awareness and understanding onto the table and into the viewer’s hearts and minds. Kitade urges us to ask: What are the effects of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? What is the current situation of the nuclear proliferation around the world? And what can we do about its the future? “A psychological weapon*” dropped “fear” upon us 65 years ago. Kitade wants to drop an artistic bomb, to stand up and fight against fear, suspicion and the untruths that infect our minds. “ I would be very happy if my work trigger’s discussions with those who have seen and have it” About the Work: From natural cold earth to gleaming high-fire surfaces, clay is the ancient anatomic medium. It is the medium in which time stands still, ideas are frozen, and yet a civilization is represented for all eternity. By working in clay, I have been able to explore significant issues about our antonymic existence, as Selves that can only be defined by the presence of the other. The main theme of my artwork is focused on questioning. The sources of the ideas are picked up from my own life experiences, starting from personal experiences and expanding into what’s happening in the world, including history, current event and future issues. Based on these themes, I question why it’s happening, what’s the real meaning, and I want to point out these issues to people. I would be very happy if my pieces triggered discussions with those who see my artwork. Each piece of artwork has a theme from my own point of view, a sarcastic nuance, and I want to plant a seed in the viewers’ hearts and minds. Kenjiro Kitade was born in Tokyo, Japan in February 1977. At the age of 13 he and his family emigrated to the United States. In 1995 he enrolled at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, majoring in Fine Art and also completed a master’s program there, concentrating in ceramic sculpture. Career highlights include the bronze at the World Ceramic Exposition in South Korea in 2005, and later showing at the highly selective SOFA show (Sculpture Objects and Functional Art) in Chicago, Miami and New York. Living and working in New York City, he participates in numerous art fairs and exhibitions, working with several galleries nationally and internationally.
