About the Item

Signed in the base, Antocolsky, bronze stamped with foundry mark F. Barbedienne. Fondeur. Paris. Gilt patinated bronze mounted on polished stone. 85 cm tall (including base). A scarce and refined cast of Antokolsky’s Mephistopheles, this example demonstrates the sculptor’s characteristic psychological intensity and precision of modeling. The figure, conceived in the early 1880s and inspired by Goethe’s Faust, departs from a purely allegorical reading of evil, instead presenting a tense, introspective presence defined by angular forms and a restrained yet expressive posture. The surface is enriched by a deep, nuanced patina that enhances the sculptural contrasts between the gaunt anatomy and the sharply articulated rock base. The integration of figure and base is particularly deliberate in this version, reinforced by the placement of the artist’s signature directly upon the base itself—a detail that underscores its compositional importance rather than treating it as a secondary support. Casts produced by the Barbedienne foundry are especially regarded for their technical fidelity and finishing quality, and comparatively few examples with complex surface treatment have appeared on the market, most being limited to standard bronze finishes.
