About the Item

Expressive figurative ceramic sculpture depicting a crouching human figure absorbed in its own inner world. Hand-modelled in glazed refractory clay, Fuxido I (2026) belongs to Óscar Aldonza Torres' ongoing exploration of emotional vulnerability, where the human body becomes a landscape of psychological tension rather than anatomical description. Measuring 42 × 38 × 35 cm, the sculpture combines powerful physical presence with an intimate emotional scale. The compact figure folds into itself, wrapping its arms around its head in a gesture that can be read as protection, exhaustion or profound introspection. Rather than representing defeat, the posture suggests the fragile moment in which thought turns inward and the individual confronts emotions that cannot be escaped. Aldonza deliberately avoids idealised anatomy, allowing gesture, weight and mass to communicate the sculpture's emotional intensity. Direct modelling remains central to the artist's practice. Every surface retains the physical memory of the sculptural process, preserving fingerprints, pressure marks and irregular textures that reinforce the sensation of a body shaped through instinct rather than calculation. Fired in high-temperature refractory clay and finished with experimental glazes, the surface develops complex mineral tones of earth, ash, bronze and oxidised green. These unpredictable reactions become an active part of the work, giving the figure the appearance of something simultaneously ancient, geological and deeply human. Fuxido—a Galician word meaning the one who has fled or the fugitive—introduces another layer of interpretation. The figure appears to seek refuge within itself, discovering that escape from the external world does not necessarily silence inner conflict. The sculpture ultimately speaks about resilience as much as fragility, transforming isolation into a space of reflection. This work belongs to a recent group of ceramic sculptures in which Aldonza investigates existential states through expressive modelling, experimental firing techniques and the emotional possibilities of refractory clay. Each sculpture is unique, embracing the unpredictability of both gesture and kiln. Medium: High-temperature glazed refractory clay. Dimensions: 42 × 38 × 35 cm. Year: 2026. Unique work.
