Upward-gazing miniature figurative head sculpture in polished bronze with dark oxidation, individually cast and hand-finished by Spanish artist Óscar Aldonza Torres.
Originally titled Mini Testa No. 2, this compact sculpture belongs to Aldonza’s Mini Testas series, in which the artist transfers his sustained investigation of the human head to an intimate and portable scale. Measuring 5 × 3.5 × 4 cm, the work is small enough to fit within the palm of the hand, yet its elongated neck, lifted face and reflective bronze surface give it a presence that appears almost monumental.
The figure rises vertically from a narrow, freestanding base. Its neck extends upwards and the head tilts back, directing the face towards a point beyond the viewer’s immediate field of vision. This posture may suggest attention, expectation or exposure, although Aldonza avoids establishing a fixed narrative. The upward-gazing head remains psychologically open: its expression changes according to the viewing angle and the way light moves across the irregular features.
Unlike the predominantly turquoise surface of Mini Testa No. 1, this sculpture is defined by the warm colour of the bronze itself. Aldonza has extensively polished the forehead, cheeks, nose, lips and neck, producing golden highlights that emerge against darker oxidised passages. Blackened areas remain inside the eyes, mouth, ears and deeper marks of the modelling, accentuating the facial structure and reinforcing the contrast between shadow and brilliance.
The surface retains scratches, indentations, asymmetries and traces of its physical formation. Rather than concealing these irregularities, the artist uses sanding and selective polishing to make them more visible. Smooth reflective passages coexist with matte, dark and granular areas, allowing the sculpture to change considerably under different lighting conditions. Close observation reveals a materially complex object whose appearance cannot be reduced to a single frontal view.
The Mini Testas derive from a shared sculptural prototype and are produced in bronze through the lost-wax casting process. This common formal origin establishes a recognisable relationship between the works, but does not result in identical replicas. Once cast, every head is individually transformed by Aldonza through oxidation, patination, sanding, abrasion and polishing. Differences in posture, surface, colour and reflected light make each sculpture a unique variant within the series. No two Mini Testas have exactly the same finish or final appearance.
This method places repetition and individuality in deliberate tension. The shared human form evokes what connects one figure to another, while the artist’s interventions introduce the differences through which a singular identity emerges. In Mini Testa No. 2, individuality is conveyed less through conventional portrait likeness than through posture and material treatment: the raised face and extensively polished surface give this particular head its own physical and psychological character.
Throughout his sculptural practice, Aldonza frequently returns to the head as a concentrated image of human presence, identity and vulnerability. Here, the historical associations of bronze with permanence, value and public monumentality are compressed into a private object. The human figure becomes physically small in relation to the symbolic grandeur of the material, while the density and luminosity of the bronze allow the miniature sculpture to retain an intensity disproportionate to its dimensions.
Its scale also encourages a tactile relationship. The work may be displayed on a shelf, desk, cabinet or within a collection of small sculptures, but it is also conceived as an object that can be lifted, turned and held. Without assigning it a mystical or ritual function, its portability recalls the intimate relationship traditionally established with medals, tokens and other personally held objects.
Mini Testa No. 2 may be acquired individually or combined with other available works from the Mini Testas series. Presented together, the sculptures create a dialogue between shared origin and individual difference: variations in orientation, proportion, oxidation, patina and polish become more visible, while the repeated scale gives the group a strong formal coherence.
