About the Item

• Picasso began working with ceramics in 1946 at the Madoura workshop in Vallauris, marking the beginning of an important and highly productive chapter in his career. What initially started as experimentation quickly became a central part of his practice during the postwar years. • Over the course of roughly twenty-five years, Picasso created more than 3,500 ceramic works, ranging from unique pieces to carefully supervised editions, transforming traditional pottery forms into highly inventive artistic objects. • Ceramics offered Picasso a new field of exploration, allowing him to extend his pictorial language into three dimensions, combining drawing, painting, engraving, and sculptural relief on clay surfaces. • The medium became a fertile ground for many of his most recognizable motifs, including bulls, owls, faces, fauns, and mythological imagery that recur throughout his broader body of work. • Today, Picasso’s ceramics occupy an important place in his oeuvre and maintain a strong presence on the international art market, appreciated both for their artistic innovation and their accessibility within Picasso’s production.
