Influenced by the expressiveness in the figures of Renaissance master Donatello, the emotional intensity of works by 19th century French sculptor Auguste Rodin, and the power of Michelangelo’s sculptures, MacDonald’s inspirational, sensitive works are precisely of the moment, yet profoundly historic by reference. And they dance rhythmically for all to see — in the leap and grace of the dancer, the power of the athlete, the gesture and passion of lovers, the spirit rises, and MacDonald captures it.

His oeuvre of cast bronzes is populated with ‘off duty’ ballet dancers, rather wistful women, often caught in moments of solitary repose. Such an obvious appreciation of the grace and elegance of the female form was, no doubt, heightened by 25 years spent in the couture business, which Benson entered at the age of 14.
