Antique bronze nude gladiator/ swordsman - Signed "Rudolf Marcuse" + "Gladenbeck Berlin" Dimensions: Sculpture: 16.5 cm high Base: 6.5 cm high Total height: 23 cm, width: 21 cm A beautifully crafted and highly collectible neoclassical bronze by the Berlin sculptor Rudolf Marcuse. It depicts a naked swordsman/gladiator. Awards and Recognition: Marcuse received several awards for his work, including a scholarship in 1902, the Michael-Beer-Preis in 1903 for his relief "Das Urteil des Salomon" (The Judgment of Solomon), and a silver medal and the Prix de Rome in 1910, which allowed him to stay at the Villa Strohl-Fern. He also won a gold medal at the Brussels International Exhibition in 1910. Design: Rudolf Marcuse, renowned Neoclassical sculptor (* January 15, 1878 in Berlin; † April 3, 1940 in London, United Kingdom) German sculptor, studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin under Ernst Herter, won the Michael Beer Prize and the Prix de Rome, was known for numerous bronze statuettes in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, and worked for, among others, the Schwarzburg Workshops for Porcelain Art, the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin, and the Rosenthal Manufactory. Patina/color: black-dark brown even patina Signature and foundry: "Rudolf Marcuse" signed in the base and "Akt.Ges. Gladenbeck Berlin" on the side of the base. He worked in Berlin until 1936 and then moved to Great Britain because of his Jewish ancestry. He lived in London until his death.
