Burmese School, 19th Century Buddha Head of the Shan (Tai Yai) Style Wood with red lacquered pigment 25 x 13 x 10 inches dry lacquer form with finely sculpted features such as the elaborate ushnisha atop his head. The elongated earlobes touch the shoulders, indicative of the time period it was initially created. Shan (Tai Yai) style Buddha head statues from Burma are characterized by a triangular face, broad forehead, and serene expression. They often feature arched eyebrows, a pointed nose, and thin, pursed lips, giving them a contemplative and calm appearance. The statues are known for their detailed craftsmanship, including the ushnisha (a cranial protuberance) and the Bhumisparsha Mudra (earth-touching gesture). This serene Buddha Head, carved in wood and finished with rich red lacquer pigment, exemplifies the refined aesthetic of the Shan (Tai Yai) style within the Burmese School, dating to the 19th century.
