About the Item

Pair Of Eagles In Carved And Gilded Wood from the mid-1800s, This pair of carved and gilded wooden birds of prey is a fascinating example of 19th-century Italian craftsmanship, featuring neoclassical symbolism that evokes the Napoleonic style. The carved sculptures, made with great attention to detail, show finely carved plumage and leaf gilding that, although showing minimal signs of time, still retain a good state of preservation. The presence of yellow Sienese earth for the top finish instead of gilding denotes that the two gilded figures were terminal decorative elements of a piece of furniture. The spread-wing pose of the eagles suggests a sense of movement and vitality, evoking their majestic nature and the symbolism of freedom and strength of this pair of animalier figures. The eagles' talons are firmly anchored to an ebonized base and rest on a small balustrade. In the backs of the two animal figures, two postern supports facilitated their anchoring. To make them stable, they were secured to a wooden cube 12 cm tall, with a base measuring 12 x 12 cm. The dimensions listed also include the modern base. Coming from a private collection, these works also tell a story of Italian tradition and craftsmanship from the mid-nineteenth century. Period: 1850 Height: 39 cm Width: 50.5cm Depth: 26.5 cm This work is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago requires a governative license for export called Belle Arti. Shipping may require an additional 1-2 weeks of handling to apply for and obtain a license depending on the final destination of the artwork.
