About the Item

Contemporary abstract geometric sculptural wall applique "Haut Relief Totem' by French artist Joseph Alessandri, signed and dated 2011 with reference number to the reverse. Superb and creative painted three dimensional panels made with superimposed cut outs of cardboard, wood and metal. Sculpture or painting? This work straddles the two. This industrial looking work has great depth of rust tones and yet here and there flashes of colour and shapes appear through the 'rust' and patination. The work also looks impressive in profile with some areas layered and sculpted to a degree that they protrude several centimetres from the panel. An eye catching work that can be presented as a stand alone sculpture or an impressive wall applique. A real talking point. Born on February 16, 1940 in Tunis, Joseph Alessandri was one of the great painters of the South of France whose universe was essentially made up of painted and sometimes burnt reliefs with applied material, wood, iron, sand, fabric, cardboard, paper, resin, leather, stone and plaster from found objects. The memory of the Mediterranean and the nostalgia of its roots are interpreted in sometimes monumental ensembles where the palette, extremely reduced, illustrates the lessons of the past of art while going beyond the limits of the pictorial grammar which he patiently acquired in the Schools of Fine Arts of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. After finishing his training Alessandri then spent 7 years working with a master glass maker before finally choosing to devote his life full time to painting and sculpture. He was close to the painter Mario Prassinos and Louis Pons, whom he met in Eygalières, a town in the Alpilles where he lived out his days until 2017 after a long time spent in Marseille. His first exhibitions were held in Marseille then in Saint Remy de Provence (the city museum houses several of his works), in Lyon, Paris where the Visconti gallery had exclusivity, then Switzerland, the United States, etc. Is it painting or sculpture? Alessandri used mainly wood as a material. Wood that he cut, planed, polished or left in its raw state and with which he developed singular pieces which were assemblies of pieces pegged, perforated, veneered onto various sorts of panels. From there arose a whole fantastic world of characters and beasts inspired by the mystical side of African Art.

It is in excellent, like-new, condition. Shipping price includes the custom packing necessary for safe transport of fine art. Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement: “I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject. There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience. They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
