About the Item

Sokol-Athlete by Jan Vítězslav Dušek is a masterpiece of athletic dynamism, national pride, and sculptural ingenuity. Its exuberant motion, expressive anatomy, and symbolic power make it a defining work of Czech modernist sculpture. Created in 1924, this dark patinated bronze sculpture embodies the energy of victorious athleticism and draws deep inspiration from the Sokol movement, a movement that celebrated physical discipline and Czech national identity. The athlete, depicted in a semi-nude state, assumes a triumphant posture, arms raised in an exalted gesture, as if reaching the pinnacle of a long-fought struggle. His precarious balance on one foot, positioned atop a geometric Cubist-inspired base, creates palpable tension and conveys an impression of perpetual motion. The influence of Antoine Bourdelle, Dušek’s mentor during his studies in Paris, is evident in the anatomical precision and psychological intensity of the figure. The sculpture was created in Tábor and cast at the renowned Franta Anýz foundry in Prague. It gained international recognition when exhibited at the XV Venice Biennale in 1926. It was also awarded a bronze medal at the Art Competition of the Paris Olympic Games in 1924 and a silver medal at the Paris Salon in 1925, solidifying Dušek’s prominence in the world of modern sculpture. Sokol-Athlete is more than just a representation of sport; it is a statement on victory, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of human excellence. Its expressive movement, sculptural mastery, and rich symbolic undertones make it a monument not only to physical strength but to the indomitable aspiration of humanity.

By Richard Tosczak

Located in Bloomfield, ON

In this thoughtful sculpture by Canadian artist Richard Tosczak, the gestures of a female figure, head bent, arms wrapped, are captured in bronze. Known for his beautiful figurative work, this piece retains the artist’s signature highly textured appearance and green-black patina. Tosczak’s pieces are first conceived on paper in quick pen and ink drawings. The spontaneity of this approach is evident in the almost abstract appearance of the sculpture. This piece is number three in an edition of eight. “The ineffable, vital qualities of the human spirit (is what I’m trying to communicate.)” - Richard Tosczak Born in Belgium, Richard Tosczak studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation. Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...

"Male Athlete with Kettlebell", Rare Bronze Sculpture with Male Nude by Seifert

By Franz Seifert

Located in Philadelphia, PA

This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. Although Seifert is known for his nude figures straining to accomplish physical tasks -- such as carrying a large bucket or splitting a stone -- this sculpture is the only example known to exist. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...
