About the Item

"Flower" is an original signed springstone sculpture by the Shona artist Rangarirai Makunde. It depicts an abstracted flower with swirling and unfolding dark forms. The sculpture weighs 145 lbs. 30 1/2" x 20" x 8" art Rangarirai Makunde was born in 1969 in Masvingo Bikita District. In his early twenties he moved to Harare, seeking better employment opportunities than were offered in his hometown. He went to Gladman Zinyeka, his uncle, who had already created a name for himself. He worked for two years as his assistant and admired the way he created his sculptures. Makunde is one of the most acclaimed artists of the new generation of sculptors. Makunde carves from observance and to bring form out of stone. He began sculpting full time which enabled him to develop his own unique style. With stone sculpting, he finally discovered a means of expressing himself. His favorite stones to work with are the hardest ones. His creations radiate a distinctively vibrant energy and color. Makunde takes particular pride in his finishes and unlike many of the other sculptors, he prefers to do the last stage of polishing himself, up to the final finish. "As an artist, I could express what is already in the stone without disrupting its natural force." He has had several exhibitions.

'Flower' original signed stone Shona sculpture by Obert Mukumbi

'Flower' original signed stone Shona sculpture by Obert Mukumbi

By Obert Mukumbi

Located in Milwaukee, WI

'Flower' is an original opal serpentine sculpture by the Zimbabwean artist Obert Mukumbi. In the sculpture, Obert emphasizes the abstract qualities of the natural forms of the calla lily: At the center, a tall and wide stamen reaches upward as curving leaves and petals break away and curve outward. The massive bulk of the usually delicate flower, as though it has been enlarged, reminds of the paintings of American modernist Georgia O'Keefe, who often used close views and thoughtful cropping to find abstract forms in nature. Here, however, the approach to the subject is purely immersed in the Shona tradition where the stone material is celebrated through contrast between rough and smooth texture and appreciation for deep colors. opal stone (serpentine) signed "O. Mukumbi" along base 22 x 12 x 12 inches Overall excellent condition with no signs of wear or damage. Obert Mukumbi was born on February 11, 1974 in the village of Dengu in Bindura, some 86 kilometers north east of Harare, Zimbabwe, where he likewise completed his O-levels in school. During his education, he was interested in wood craft. By age twelve, however, he began working in stone under the guidance and encouragement of his brother Kennedy...

'Ring of Hope' is an original Shona stone sculpture signed by the Zimbabwean artist Wonder Mazhindu Bumhira. This sculpture is an excellent example of his abstract works. Out of the stone emerge organic, curving figures – at once suggesting lips while also suggesting the form of a calla lily. These forms are balanced atop two leg-like stems. These floral themes are well reflected by the green hue color of the opal serpentine stone, a soft stone filled with color and texture when polished. opal stone (serpentine) 32 x 9.25 x 5 inches 63 lbs signed 'W.
