About the Item

"Lunar Calendar VI" is a wall sculpture made of copper, paint, pigments & mica on wood + light LED lights are installed verso and there is an extension chord that needs to be plugged in. Corrina is inspired by the work of Louise Bourgeois, Louise Nevelson, Albert Paley, Lee Bontecou. Corrina Sephora is an Atlanta-based mixed-media Artist specializing in sculpture, painting and installation. Her current show, Reflections on the Universe, weaves ancestral memory with cosmic reflection, creating works that become vessels between worlds. Many of the pieces respond to the final words her poet mother shared before becoming, as Corrina describes it, “stardust”: “I’m sending you a prayer from the moon.” “Her voice continues to guide me,” Corrina reflects, “as the work moves between earthly presence and celestial distance, the known and the unseen.” At the center of this body of work are Corrina’s Aviron sculptures. Formed from metal and rooted in her lineage of boatbuilding and seafaring, these works exist somewhere between oar and staff. They function as symbolic vessels, carrying memory across visible and invisible waters while suggesting passage, ritual and guidance. The works are informed by the ancient tradition of blacksmithing, where fire and force transform raw material into objects of meaning. Historically, blacksmiths were not only makers, but also figures associated with healing, transformation and spiritual mediation. This lineage informs the Avirons, imbuing them with both physical presence and symbolic resonance. A large, airy boat form anchors the exhibition, holding a copper figure reminiscent of an ancient totem, a goddess, or perhaps a plumb bob. Standing vertically within the space, it becomes a site for contemplation and transport; a vessel for reflection among the ceremonial Avirons. “Light moves through the works with a quiet luminosity that evokes the moon and the rhythms it governs,” suggests Corrina. “The relationship between water and moon, tide and pull, suggests an underlying harmony between nature and spirit, where cycles of movement connect human experience to the larger cosmos.” The accompanying paintings unfold as maps of remembrance, exploring thresholds between life and afterlife, matter and spirit, the individual and the infinite. Together, the works become a meditation on passage and return, and on the enduring connection between water, moon, and the unseen forces that guide us. Corrina earned her BFA in Metals and Sculpture from Massachusetts College of Art in 1995 and her MFA in Sculpture from Georgia State University in 2005. She has completed residencies throughout the United States and abroad. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections and is permanently installed at institutions including the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia.
